Which Tennis Court Construction Method Is Best for You?

by Walter Alexander

Other than grass tennis courts, which simply need to be rolled flat a few times a year and have their markings repainted, there are three other main tennis court construction methods to choose from. If you are considering having a new tennis court installed at your home, then there is no right or wrong choice. The different construction methods employed each have their pros and cons. Read on to find out more about them.

Hardcourts

A hard tennis court construction method involves laying resin over a substrate. Usually, tennis court construction firms will level out the ground and pour a layer of concrete which acts as the substrate once it hardens. Only in certain cases will the concrete be left in situ without any further treatment. For a true hardcourt construction, some resin will be applied over the top which creates a more even bounce and a superior appearance. Hardcourts are in use all over the world in tennis clubs because they are easy to maintain. What's more, they can often be adapted to other uses, such as use as a basketball court. One of the major downsides to the hardcourt construction method is that they usually produce a very fast playing surface. Also, many people who only play on hardcourts find that they suffer from progressive joint injuries.

Artificial Grass Courts

Synthetic grass tennis courts are becoming increasingly popular. This type of tennis court construction method involves providing an easy way for water to escape via underground channels and culverts. A synthetic layer of plastic grass is then placed over the top of this underground construction. Water can then trickle down inside. The major advantage of this system is that it means being able to play again quite soon after any rain has fallen because artificial grass courts dry out quickly. What's more, synthetic grass courts tend to be easier on ankle and knee joints. They are also virtually maintenance-free but are less adaptable than hardcourts. If you go for this option, then you can expect to pay a bit more, and you may find that the bounce of the ball is not always as even as you would expect from a harder service.

Clay Courts

Finally, it is worth mentioning that clay courts are still often constructed in Australia these days. They require a traditional tennis court construction method but they will last for a very long time indeed so long as they are properly maintained. A clay court takes some getting used to if you have not played on them regularly before, however. Nonetheless, they are a bit more forgiving underfoot than the other types of court you could choose.

About Me

Golfing Tips To Improve Your Handicap

As a keen golfer whose been playing for over twenty years, I see a lot of beginners on the course who have picked up some bad habits that are holding them back from achieving the handicap they're capable of. I started this blog to share the tips I've gathered from experienced golfers over the years and see it as a place where I can publicly answer the questions I'm asked at the clubhouse time and time again. If you have a topic you'd like me to write a post on, or if you have a question about swing, stance, club selection or any other related topic, I'd love to hear from you.
